Obituary for John Abram Harder

John Abram Harder
John Harder
January 16th, 1955 - May 31st, 2018

John, my faithful, loving husband, passed away peacefully into the Lord’s presence in the early hours of May 31 after battling cancer for several years. We were married 33 years ago at Bethany Chapel on June 15, 1985. David, Dayna, and Jordan will dearly miss their devoted father, whose commitment to his faith and strong family values will influence their lives forever. The eldest of five siblings, John is survived by his sisters Linda Watt (Dallas), Susan Hau (Henry), Kathy Masih (Prakash), brother Dave Harder (JoAnne), and many nieces and nephews. Our families will miss his sense of humour, storytelling antics, and gracious character.

John was born on January 16, 1955 and raised in Brandon, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents John and Anna Harder. As a new grad of Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1979, John ventured west to Brooks, Alberta to join Schlumberger. Over the next 34 years, John worked in the Calgary oil patch with Morgan Hydrocarbons, NorthRock Resources, Talisman Energy, TAQA, Roke Technologies, and Korean National Oil Company.

John lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed parachute jumping, windsurfing, backcountry skiing, and competing with the Calgary ice canoeing team at the Winter Carnival in Quebec City. He was also an avid runner, hockey player, cyclist, and water skier. John and I loved our traveling adventures together, highlighted by cycling through Europe and BC and snorkeling in Cuba and Hawaii. Out of all our travels, John’s most treasured trip was our biblical tour of Israel on our 30th wedding anniversary. Our family has special memories vacationing at our Christina Lake cabin, skiing in Kimberley, and river canoeing and hiking many trails together at Mt. Assiniboine. John certainly shared his adventurous spirit and passion for enjoying God’s creation with his family. He loved to dedicate his extra time as a hockey coach and scout leader. John also served in various roles at Bethany Chapel, Camp Okotoks, Salem Acres Bible Camp, and Alberta Pro-Life.

John has left us too early, but our hope, comfort, and peace is the assurance that we will be reunited in heaven.

A Memorial Service for John will be held at Bethany Chapel of Calgary (3333 Richardson Way SW) on Saturday, June 16, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Salem Acres Bible Camp or The Wilberforce Project. Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to the Foothills Medical Centre, Palliative Home Care, CBI Home Health, and the Sarcee Hospice for their compassionate care for John.
