Obituary for Maria Osterling (Wasch)

Maria Osterling (Wasch)
Osterling, Maria
January 29, 1934 – May 30, 2018

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maria (Wasch) Osterling, our beloved mother, and oma (grandmother). She passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday May 30, 2018 at the age of 84. Maria was born on January 29, 1934 in Lukavac, Yugoslavia. She left Yugoslavia with her parents and brother in 1953 and immigrated to Taber, Alberta to work in the sugar beet farms.

Maria was a strong, determined, hardworking and kind-hearted woman. After moving to Canada, Maria soon became part of the German-Canadian community and worked as a landscaper for several years adding colour and beauty to many Calgary neighbourhoods. Maria filled her life with family, beautiful flowers, delicious meals, desserts and countless friends. Maria was an active member of the St Boniface parish and she was especially proud of being part of the St. Boniface Church Ladies Group, which was a big part of her life.

Maria was known for her chocolate chip cookies and her flower beds; she prided herself in being a good cook and an excellent gardener. Maria’s special occasion meals always consisted of numerous options, and there always enough to feed whoever was coming and probably 20 more guests. She loved baking, and there was never a birthday or special occasion that she didn’t make a cake for, and if you ever had the chance to eat one you know how rich and delicious they were.

She took so much pride in her flowers and most times it was difficult to find a spot in the house or outside without any. Every year she would start around 150 to 200 geraniums in the house and would plant all of them outside in the spring. In the early winter months, you could also find multiple tomato, hot pepper plants and a variety of annuals started in the house. Once her flowers were planted and all in bloom people walking by would stop in awe at her beautiful yard. She was always so proud that she had the most beautiful yard on the street and each year held herself to the same standard. Being a landscaper, she was in tune with her plants, Maria had that green thumb. During the winter months you could find Maria knitting or crocheting; she displayed many of her works in her home. Like her plants and everything else, Maria grew solid and strong relationships with her family, friends and acquaintances and shared her knowledge of baking and gardening with whoever would ask and listen. Maria was a devoted wife, mom, grandmother and friend and was highly respected among her peers. She was always the last one out of the church because everyone was always eager to catch up with her.

Maria was a simple lady and never treated herself to a restaurant meal unless she was enjoying KFC on Boxing Day with her brother’s family or out with the ladies group. More recently however we realized that mom really enjoyed eating out, specifically at Alforno’s for eggs benedict and steamed milk or the Italian club for pasta and tiramisu. These were treats she always loved and enjoyed with her family. Maria enjoyed a good meal and the occasional sip of Tia Maria.

Maria shared a special love with her grandchildren. While her grandchildren were growing up she would take them to the park, sometimes three in one day, feed the ducks and sometimes fishing kids out of the pond. Once she moved to the nursing home she created new memories with her grandchildren by walking around Prince’s Island Park, feeding the geese and planting flowers on her balcony.

Her husband John was her life. She fixed his sweet tooth with her baking and always acted like a backseat driver even though she never drove a day in her life. The love she had for John was true love. Maria was the best wife, mother, mother-in law and oma that anyone could hope for. Her stories, quick remarks, and smile will be greatly missed by all of us. Thank you for spending another 2 years with us even though you missed dad (opa) every day. The extra time and activities we shared together will be cherish forever. You are already so missed, but we know you are reunited with opa and are ready to start baking and gardening for everyone in heaven. We love you, until next time.

Maria is survived by her loving sons; Mike (Sharon), Anton (Dora); his grandchildren Elyse (Kyle Schaub), Kristin, Adam, Cassidy, and Danya. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Martha Osterling and Anne Wasch, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother Barbara (Stiblo) Wasch (1984), her father Vinzenz Wasch (1983), her brother Frank Wasch (2015), as well as her in-laws Anton and Anne Osterling, brothers-in-laws Michael and Franz Osterling, and nephew Johann Osterling.

We would like to thank the many doctors who cared for Maria over the years, especially Dr. Yolanda Kao, Dr. Stacy Davies, Nurse Practitioner Faye Lazar and Dr. Sengar. A special thanks to the staff at Newport Harbour Care and Chartwell Eau Claire Care Residence for the care they have given Maria over the past three years.
