Obituary for Glen Edwin Hanson

Hanson, Glen Edwin
1926 - 2019

Glen Edwin Hanson, 92, of Calgary, died Monday, January 14, 2019 at the Rocky View Hospital of natural causes. He was born on February 7, 1926 to Carl & Gladys Hanson in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

Glen was the eldest of his 3 siblings and grew up on a farm located 13 miles west of Weyburn. His father passed away in 1931 from cancer when he was only 5 years old. His mother remained on the farm and raised the children with the help of her parents Robert & Barbara Ashby thru the Great Depression. Glen joined the Regina Rifles Regiment in 1944 and served our country in World War II with a tour overseas.

He married Ruth Roberts on October 1, 1948 and they had three children, Ron, Larry and Doug.

He worked as a plant supervisor for a soft drink company for over thirty years, and then when most people now days strive to retire at 55, he started his own general contracting company which he really enjoyed doing small projects for over 15 years. He and Ruth during this time of semiretirement spent several years traveling down to Meza Arizona in the cold months. They had many great times with their Canadian & American friends there. They also found time to travel the globe going to Europe and Australia. In their 80’s their travels took them from coast to coast in Canada. They spent the winter months in Victoria and Vernon BC, where they walked an average of 10km per day.

He was avid camper/outdoors person, enjoyed Scouting with his sons in their early years in Boy Scouts. He made annual fishing trips with his now adult sons and often was the last to go to sleep on those outings. He cross country skied and downhill skied once. Literally only made one run down from the top, without falling, got to the bottom took the ski’s off and said he was finished.

Glen is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth; 3 sons and their wives, Dot, Colleen and Monica; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Norma McMann of Port Alberni BC and Ken Hanson of Wetaskiwin AB. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl & Gladys, and brother, Carl Hanson of Calgary AB.

As per his wishes, no funeral service is being held. His body is to be cremated. Memorials or donations may be made to Calgary Cancer Foundation.
